[livejournal.com profile] jebra and I have driven to Ionia for the the weekend. We're visiting my mother and attending Bev's annual soup supper. This year the theme is "stone soup." I figure the resulting soups will be interesting, although perhaps not edible.

Supper isn't until 5:30, so at the moment mom has bread baking, we're listening to The Man of La Mancha, Gabe's taking a break from music transcription and having some lunch, and I've caught up on LJ. Now I need to decide whether I want to do more knitting, or if I'd prefer to read the zine I brought with me.

Is this soup dinner based on the Stone Soup kids' story?

Sounds very interesting! =>}

Yes, the children's story provided the idea.

As it turned out, the soups were quite tasty. Bev provided four bases: tomato, chicken, beef, and white cream. I tried all four of the resulting soups and enjoyed them all. Turnout was light this year -- about 25 people as compared with the 40 or so that attended in 2006. I can't decide if the soups would have tasted even better with more ingredients, or if more could have ruined any of them. Some of the combinations were unusual to be sure. I can't say I've ever had kidney beans in my tomato soup. Or carrots in what began as a ham/potato/cream soup.

Does each person bring an ingredient, or something like that?

Yes, each person brings something to contribute to at least one of the four types of soups. We brought three-cheese tortellini. My mom contributed onions sauteed in olive oil. Guests could bring whatever ingredient(s) they felt like bringing just so long as the item was already cooked. Bev wanted the soups to be ready pretty much at the same time as her guests' arrival, and waiting for a couple of hours while say, the carrots softened or the chicken cooked would have made for a very long night.
