The business next door to where we work has been closed for about six months. A few weeks ago I heard a rumor that the business on our other side is shutting down. And this morning I heard (from our boss, who heard it from one of the principals involved) that the business across the street from us is considering closing. They're a computer reseller that focuses on equipping school systems and so far this year they've signed one contract. All of their employees have already taken pay cuts. If sales haven't picked up come July, they too will go out of business.

Wow, sorry to hear it. Not sure if I ever mentioned in my blog that when I was arranging to get my profit sharing a couple months ago from the place where I used to work there were 6 people left working there, (3 of those bosses, all brothers) (not sure if a 7th was part time or laid off for the winter, I forgot to ask). When I first started there were no less than 20 people.

For the last couple years or so they had during the winter 2 delivery drivers (& 4 - 5 people laid off). This year was 1 also doing my job in one location. The second this year had to take a lay-off just to get paid. They were a month & a half behind on payroll because they didn't have enough money to pay anyone other than themselves.

I wouldn't be surprised if they go out of business either by the end of this year or next.

They've been trying to sell the building in Livonia for at least 5 years or so with no luck.

Yup. I keep saying the MI economy is in a free fall. People who don't live in MI don't believe me.

Last night's AA news said AA just ranked as the 5th worst midsize city in the country for finding a job.

This whole economy mess is so scary, and I worry about it a lot. I don't think I'm in too much danger of losing my job, because I work in a hospital and there are always sick people, unfortunately. Also, I have a lot of seniority. Of course, no one can consider their job perfectly safe. I hope you and your family will be okay.

But mostly, I worry about what this is doing to the whole world in general. It takes a long time to come back from a serious depression, and also, economic problems create a breeding ground for pogroms and dangerous tyrants and things like that.
