There's still too much going on and we've been cursed with computer problems. We've been updating the software on all of our computers, both at home and at work. This has not gone seamlessly; I lost everything in my main mailbox (at home) and when I left work tonight my computer and my monitor were no longer on speaking terms.

On Monday when I got home from work I realized that the outdoor temperature was just about perfect and decided I'd take advantage of the situation and haul the compost bucket out to the compost bin as it was getting full and rather stinky. Walking out to the far corner of the yard revealed that we once again have mulberry trees coming up along the fence line. I got out my clippers and an hour and half later I had two large garden waste bags filled with leaves & cuttings and three blisters. Will I never learn?

I have told myself the same lie multiple times. Last night I was taking out the garbage and I saw a weed in the butterfly garden. I reached down and pulled it up and something stung my index finger. (sigh) Honestly, gardens are trying to kill us.

With the amount of work I need to do in mine, it still might. Not that I'll get to it before next week at the soonest. I managed to cut down the pokeberry in the front yard but I didn't do any other weeding up there and I was warned that one of the weeds growing in the bed will produce burrs that are difficult to remove from one's self & clothing. That was weeks ago when I took a photo of its rather pleasant flowers in an effort to get the thing identified. I can't remember what I was told (it wasn't a formal name, more along the lines of "I don't remember, but something in this latin-name family" (and heck if I can remember the latin part either)). And note I haven't mentioned the herb garden or the area out behind the garage. The herb garden is almost entirely weeds -- if the weeds haven't crowded out the chives and ferns I'd stuck there this Spring in an attempt to save them from the even worse spot they were in. I think the best option here is to cut down whatever isn't ferns or chives and, if anything is worth saving, move it elsewhere. Because I came up with what I think is a clever idea -- covering the remains of the herb garden with the sheets of plywood left over from being used as forms for the garage's foundation (the builders left them behind) and smothering whatever's left. If I'm lucky everything underneath will break down and I'll have nice soft good dirt next Spring when we will hopefully have both the time and the money to do something about replacing the raised beds.

It's been too hot here to garden, despite some intermittent rain - heat indices have been in the triple digits even when the actual temperature is only in the lower 90s.

Which is my excuse for not gardening, and I ain't got nothing but weeds, basically. Something that looks suspiciously like poison ivy is growing in my herb garden, and as for my flower garden, my few surviving marigolds are being swallowed up in weeds.

Before I tackle that poison ivy, I definitely have to get some gloves, or else.

*sigh* I'm so done with summer.

I think your plywood idea sounds fantastic - if my herb and flower gardens weren't in front of our house, I'd do that, too. Although, I suppose, one could always put mulch over the plywood so it wouldn't look bad.

Mulberrys are awful, aren't they? They come up as volunteers here, too. So invasive. My other big problem is the holly bush some damn fool planted on the corner of my house. We've cut it back several times but it always rebounds like a NBA star. I keep threatening to put a chain around the bottom and rip it out by the roots but I'm afraid if I do that corner of the house will fall into a hole. And, add to that, it's apparently THE hang-out spot for several species of stinging insects.

Ugh.
