Felting wool, again

The first piece I felted by hand was 19"x23" before felting and measured 16"x16" afterwards. The second piece was 9.75"x11" before felting. After boiling for 5 minutes, it measured 9"x10". The texture wasn't what I wanted -- I thought the definition of the stitches would be indistinct. I was wrong, as you can see
You can also see that boiling made the color change.
I didn't object to the color change, but I wasn't happy with the size of the clutch nor its flimsiness when I checked on it this morning. I filled a bucket with hot soapy water and hand-felted the clutch for another five minutes. When I checked on it after work tonight, the bag measured 8.25"x8"
