Sorry there was a funeral on that list, but I'm glad that Tuba Christmas was included!

The funeral was for my Aunt, which is to say my adoptive mother's sister. We weren't close and I went to show support for my cousins. I'm not close to them either but it meant a lot to me when folks came to my dad's funeral so I thought I should repay the debt. Anyway, the funeral had a few high points. One of them was seeing a woman sign 'Hail Mary.' It was dramatic and dance-like and so beautifully done, it brought tears to my husband's eyes. My Aunt decided she wanted to buried above ground, so she had her husband moved into a mausoleum and bought the space next to his. I've never seen anyone entombed before and it was fascinating. I even managed not to laugh when the cemetery workers brought out what looked like duct tape. (They put a tarp over the casket and taped the
sides down before sliding it into the wall.)

The TubaChristmas was fun too -- the church it is in is old, historic, and downright gorgeous. I always enjoy going there as they are such a welcoming bunch and I approve of their works -- they do a lot to record the history of race relations and the labor movement, not to mention have some impressive programs to help the poor and unemployed. But that wasn't my favorite part this year -- that was when the conductor asked everyone to stand and sit when the number of TubaChristmases was higher than they've attended. By the time she hit 15 or 16 everyone but my husband had sat down. When she got to 21 or 22 he looked around and
realized he was not only the only one standing but would continue to do so for a while. So he spoke up and admitted this was his 40th. As he said, he really likes TubaChristmas. He plays in as many as he can each season, averaging five each year.

Before I go, I was delighted that your trip was great fun (and that's Rosie's tooth extraction went well). Happy Christmas to you & Pat.
