Garden Photos

A stranger sent me email asking for photos of native gardens to show to a boy scout considering planting a native garden as a part of his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project. Just in case any of you care about native plants (particularly those native to Michigan), I posted three galleries of photos up on flickr.

Three photos of my wild backyard can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/29859429@N07/sets/72157622439101050/

Someone else in my subdivision is interested in native plants, as attested by these three photos of their front yard: http://www.flickr.com/photos/29859429@N07/sets/72157622438823432/

And lastly, a larger gallery containing photos of the Detroit Zoo's Demonstration Suburban Backyard and their Monarch Butterfly Garden: http://www.flickr.com/photos/29859429@N07/sets/72157622314416471/

Any recommendations about where to get native plants or what the plants are?

For the where, I'm partial to Prairie Nursery and Ion Exchange. American Roots in Ortonville is another great source, but as far as I know they aren't on the web.

As for what to get, well, for Southeast Michigan, there's a fairly comprehensive list here. For other regions, I'd consult with The Wild Ones, The DNR, and The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. I'd also take a look at the 1800 Vegetation Map for my county (http://web4.msue.msu.edu/mnfi/data/veg1800.cfm).

If you're looking for a book, I like the Revised Edition of the Michigan Gardener's Guide.

You have a lovely garden!

Whenever I go to the Zoo (which is frequently, being only a mile away), I always walk the "back yard" path. It's sheltered and quiet, and it's always fun to see the chipmunks and birds back there.

Yes, their backyard is also one of my favorite walks.

Beautiful!

My folks were from the Kalamazoo area and it reminds me of the wild area around my grandparents old homestead-very pretty.
