Yes, Ingress is a phone-based game. It involves"augmented reality" -- you go to real places in the physical world and then do things on your phone to change the virtual version. Basically there are two teams, blue and green, and each side wants to own and control as many places as possible. To quote from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingress_(game):

Ingress is an augmented reality massively multiplayer online role playing GPS-dependent game[4] created by Niantic Labs, a startup within Google, originally for Android devices,[5] and since July 14, 2014 for Apple's iOS.[3] The game has a complex science fiction back story with a continuous open narrative.[6][7]

The gameplay consists of establishing "portals" at places of public art, landmarks, monuments, etc., and linking them to create virtual triangular fields over geographic areas. Progress in the game is measured by the number of "mind units" (MUs), i.e. people nominally controlled by each faction (as illustrated on the Intel Map).[8][9] The necessary links between portals may range from feet/meters to miles/kilometers or hundreds of miles/kilometers in operations of considerable logistical complexity.[10] International links and fields are not uncommon, as Ingress has attracted an enthusiastic following in cities worldwide[11] amongst both young and old,[12] to the extent that the gameplay is itself a lifestyle for some, including tattoos.[2]

Yes, that's one of my hats. It's also sorta through my Jayne hats that I met her -- I was putting away my phone for the night when I saw my name scroll across the top of my screen thanks to Google's hangout app. Of course I had to investigate further, and discovered that one of my Ingress friends was saying "Maybe you could get Audrey to knit you a Jayne Hat like the one she did for me." So I went farther back into the Hangout chat, discovered why she could use one, and volunteered to make her one free of charge as my contribution to the cause. And that's how I found myself knocking on a stranger's front door Saturday afternoon. And what an incredibly cool house was behind the door and an equally fascinating group of people.

Have you heard of "Slow Roll Detroit"? I hadn't until I looked up Nanette's blog and found the Huffington Post article. I think there were other Slow Roll folk there to witness the hair shaving, not just Ingress players. I now want to get our bikes back to the repair shop so I can go on one of these adventures during the warmer months.
