If I counted the hours, I would not be at all surprised to learn that I spend roughly twelve hours a day thinking about, or reading about, politics. A smallish percent of that is devoted to the intersection of politics and religion. Which lead to this morning's reading of A florist caught between faith and financial ruin in the Christian Science Monitor. I cannot recall ever feeling so torn between two incompatible beliefs, the belief that one has to live up to the dictates of one's own morals/religion and other being that discrimination is flat out wrong.

Eventually I remembered about those religious sermons concerning slavery and how the bible said slavery was A-Okay. Eventually the church caught up and decided that slavery was a bad thing but I don't remember how, exactly, that change took place. I wish I could because I think whatever strategy was used then will have to be re-employed to correct church thinking and teaching when it comes to marriage.

One of the stories I remember from childhood is the "The Emperor's New Clothes;" when I tell it to myself it begins not with the weavers but with his staff claiming that he is dressed fabulously and that they are in the presence of true greatness. And that was all I could think of when I read Trump’s Cabinet, With a Prod, Extols the ‘Blessing’ of Serving Him this morning. My stomach is literally churning with disgust that (a) he needs a course of flattery before getting down to the business of leading the country and (b) that his administration is willing to give it to him.

Late last night I learned there is a kickstarter for a film about fandom and from the sound of it, I think it could be a whole lot of fun and hopefully it will be because I just realized I pledged slightly more than half of my monthly allowance to the project. The film concerns a fictional buddy cop show called Bay City. If you're interested in backing it, or just learning more, here's a link to the kickstarter page:

If This is Wrong: A Film About Fandom.

p.s. You can tell I'm excited just by looking at that run-on sentence in the first paragraph!

Spring is here and the spring flowers are not only blooming, many have started to fade. Our rhubarb is nearly knee-high and weeds are doing their best to take over the garden beds. Not that I felt like doing any weeding over the weekend — cleaning up from the coffee spill took most of Saturday and on Sunday we wanted to go walk at the zoo. That seemed particularly important as we'd tried to go for a long walk Saturday evening and I didn't even make it all the way down to 12 Mile before I admitted defeat and had us turn around and return home. I'm not so much sick as cold and exhausted. Next week I see my sleep apnea doctor and I'm looking forward seeing him. I have two CPAP machines, the first one I got and then the second, a newer model that records what it does. I figured the doctor would want the data and switched to using the newer model a week or two ago. I have a harder time sleeping with new one and I'm not sure why. It is quieter, it seems to blow harder, and absolutely worst of all, it doesn't humidify the air as effectively as the old machine. After two or three hours my throat hurts so much it wakes me up. Drinking a half liter of water puts a dent in the pain and I go back to bed. I'm wondering if there is something I can do to the machine to increase the humidity of the air I'm breathing.

The trip to the zoo was far different than it was during the winter, the biggest difference being the number of zoo visitors. I knew it was going to be crowded when, before we even reached the gated entrance I saw cars parked on the lawn. The parking structure was full and the big parking lot had cars squeezed into nooks and crannies that aren't actual parking places. We walked around for a few hours and then went out to dinner.

So, there I am, reading cheezburger like everyone else and think "Hmmm, that rather looks like where I was over the weekend." So I read the little blurb underneath and the dog's name is the same as the one I met. So I google a little and sure enough, that was them.

For someone who had never been exposed to furries before, she handled everything really well. As did her dog. He's a real sweetheart and delighted me by nearly knocking me over with his enthusiasm to be petted.

The photos on cheezburger aren't nearly as delightful as Nikon Lion's. I really don't understand anyone who wouldn't want to hang around such bright and colorful characters. As a general rule they are all wonderful people who are kind, polite, love animals, and very willing to open their wallets and support charities that help animals.

Thank you to everyone who helped me celebrate my birthday. Getting ready for the trip to Indianapolis was exhausting and it's a good thing I wasn't the driver as I slept almost all of the way there. I also slept a lot while we were at the con — it's a nice hotel but our function space was crowded and *loud.* I think the longest I lasted in the main or side rooms was 15 minutes. After that it was either retreat to the hallway or to our room.

On Sunday, before heading home we went to Noblesville to meet up with our favorite harpist and have coffee with her. Then we stopped at my brother- and sister-in-law's house to have an early dinner with them. We got home around midnight, I think. And then stayed up to unpack and reassure the cats we were back where they think we belong. I arranged for us to take Monday off, which was good as I was a zombie all day. Although I did accidentally discover the fastest method of getting [livejournal.com profile] jebra out of bed — ask him what time it is and then ask him when the rental car was due back at Enterprise (in this case, the two numbers being the same).

I was just scrolling through the online tv guide and took a look at viceland just in case one of the shows I was curious about is on at this ungodly hour. None are, but I did discover that movie I mentioned the other day. It's called The House I Live in" and the online listing reads "Eugene Jarecki, David Simon (2012) The death of his housekeeper's son inspires filmmaker Eugene Jarecki to add up the true cost of America's losing was on drugs." It's an extremely interesting film and I recommend seeing it.

  1. I don't trust companies that spend a fortune on advertising. Cable, cell, and credit card companies, I'm looking at you.
  2. I hate receiving offers that include plastic credit-card like things. I can recycle paper, but the plastic cards? Off to the landfill.

I hadn't had an ocular migraine for a very long time, possibly years. I had one last night though, after we got home from seeing Gore Vidal's The Best Man at the Baldwin. The play is about the process of selecting the best presidential candidate and going by the audience and lack thereof, it seems everyone is sick of presidential politics. The play was good and it provided food for thought, but half of the already small audience left at the intermission. Before going, I was worried I'd have a bad reaction to the story but I was doing fine at intermission and my only comment upon leaving was "Where's Merwin when we need him?" I was taking my nightly shower and thinking about the play when the migraine hit but I looked up ocular migraines this morning and the medical sites I referenced do not mention stress as a trigger. So perhaps it was just a coincidence. At any rate, it lasted about 20 minutes and, as usual for me, there was no associated pain.
