Last year we got a letter from our insurance company informing us that our garage was in too poor of condition to insure. This year we're having it torn down and replaced, which is not only expensive but a ton of work as a great many items that survived the flood were relocated to the garage during cleanup. In fact, emptying the garage is going about as well as emptying the basement did -- we work and work and work and somehow the garage remains full. It did not help that we had a few boxes of stuff that moved to the house with us 20+ years ago and have been in the garage ever since.

For example... )

When I went into the living room to fetch my eyeglasses, phone, and thumb drive this morning, I found Hamish on the couch occupying two cat beds:

ETA: After adding the two additional cat beds I began last night plus one extra to Ravelry, I'm up to 201 projects since 2009. Not that the count is accurate because some of the projects were for multiples of an item.

These are just the latest three projects. I have more shelter blankets at home, not to mention plastic bags, old towels, and a big box of diabetic supplies. What I lack is the time to drive them out them to Dearborn.

Arthritis in my hands has slowed down my knitting. I haven't so much as touched my needles since Friday. Although now that I think on it, that isn't an accurate statement as I had to handle my 9" DPNs when I slid them into their new home.

I had the outer fabric but no lining, so I went fabric shopping on Saturday and sewed the new needle roll on Sunday.

We'd hoped to spend the weekend cleaning out the pond, but the weather did not cooperate. Cleaning the pond is not much fun and being cold and wet makes it a miserable experience, so we put it off and worked on indoor stuff. If it warms up and stops raining, we'll clean the pond this coming weekend. If it doesn't, we may have to skip going to the East Lansing Art Fair the following weekend.

If you know someone who likes fingerless mittens and want to buy a pair (for yourself or as a gift), I've put a pair up at
save_liz (here).

The only other bit of news I can think of (besides marking the passing of hollyilex), is that I have a doctor's appointment this evening. I've run out all my prescribed medicines and I haven't been in for a year, so this is (hopefully) just routine.

I am fighting off a cold, one which so far has taken over only the left side of my head. My left nostril is keeping me busy reaching for yet another new tissue while the one on the right side feels perfectly clear and normal. How does that happen?

Friday night after work we went home after a wee bit of shopping and tried to get to bed at a reasonable hour.

Saturday was SEMGS and we had such a good time we were among the last to leave. When I climbed into the car I thought it was only around ten or eleven, and I was so surprised by the time showing on the dashboard clock that I had to ask Jebra if it was malfunctioning. It wasn't; it really was after 1:00 in the morning and it was after 2:00 by the time we got home. I still had to take my night-time medicines and take a quick spin through email, so it was somewhere between 3:00 and 4:00 before I got to bed.

I'd hoped to check out flintHANDMADE on Sunday, but I knew that wasn't going to happen, especially when we were expected at an early St. Patrick's Day celebration later in the day. We'll have to try again next month.

Much tea was consumed while waiting for dinner to come out of the oven (corned beef, greens, boiled cabbage, turnips, and potatoes). Jebra made soda bread before we went over and that was really good too.

I brought my needle crafts with me, both to SEMGS and to Sunday dinner. On Saturday I finished yet another Jayne Hat, and crocheted a cute hat from the pattern Jean gave me. She also provided yarn, but I didn't want to risk messing up her good yarn until I was sure I could follow the instructions. My sample hat passed muster, so on Sunday I crocheted two more, one in red and another in blue using Jean's nice Borroco alpaca.

The first five people to respond to this post will get something made by me. If I can make it, I will give it my best go!

This offer does have some restrictions so please read:
- I make no guarantees that you will like what I make.
- What I create will be just for YOU. You are allowed to make requests and I will try to honour them.
- It will be done before 2011.
- It might be cookies, a mix cd, a fic, a scarf
- You'll need to PM me your mailing address if you're one of the first

In return, all you need to do is repost this on your LJ and offer to make 5 things for 5 other people.

Spread your baking/crafty/artistic/writing skills among the lj masses!

So far, the most complicated knitting pattern I've tried is this one by Chris de Longpré at Knitting At KNoon Designs. I didn't want to risk wasting good yarn, so I used the yarn I had left over from the baby blankets I made over the summer.

See how they turned out here )

Also amusing me is that the name of the yarn is "Homespun" and the scrapbook kit I used to create the page is "Home Grown" by Divine Digital.

Y'know how you can put things off because the deadline is a whole two weeks away? And then there's just one day left and there's tons you haven't gotten around to doing yet? Yep, that's the state I'm in today.

In those two weeks though, I have managed to figure out what the number one thing I'm best at in the whole world. Making messes.

See? )

On the other hand, I am quite pleased by how the collage turned out.

Yesterday [info]jebra and I went in to the office to work on some of our personal projects. Computer stuff in [info]jebra's case, various craft projects in mine. I think [info]jebra got a few things knocked off his list, but I wasn't nearly as successful. Mostly, I fought with my sewing machine. I want to make a needle case for my circular knitting needles but heck if I could get my machine to sew a simple zig-zag, let alone button holes.

Today we stayed late so that I could continue work on my projects. I upgraded my DPN needle roll by adding a tie closure, ironed a stack of quilt pieces, and attempted to repair our comforter. The only problem with the comforter is that some of the top-stitching has come undone, but the comforter is so thick it barely fits under the presser foot and then when I tried to stitch, the quilt wouldn't advance. After the third time of having the thread jam, I gave up. I'm going to stitch it by hand some other day.

By the time I cleaned up my mess and was ready to leave, it was after 8:00. And I still wanted to stop at JoAnn Fabrics to take my sewing machine in for repair. We arrived ten minutes before the store closed -- only to learn that the folks who run the Viking Sewing Shop (located inside JoAnn Fabrics) had left already. The Viking center closes an hour earlier than the rest of the store. *sigh* We'll try again tomorrow.

Yesterday, after work, I finished both of the Jayne Hats I knit while I was in Indiana. This wasn't difficult, as all that was left was making and attaching pompoms. I also washed a load of laundry and repaired a pair of denim shorts.
